Hospitals, Emergency Services & Airports Near Panama City Beach
Out-of-state buyers ask about healthcare quality before they commit. Here's a complete guide to hospitals, urgent care, emergency services, and the best airports serving Panama City Beach.
Hospitals, Emergency Services & Airports Near Panama City Beach
One of the most common questions I get from out-of-state buyers — especially retirees, families with young children, and anyone with ongoing medical needs — is: "What's the healthcare situation like out there?"
It's a smart question. Panama City Beach is a resort destination, and the medical infrastructure has grown significantly to match its year-round population. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.
Hospitals Serving Panama City Beach
Ascension Sacred Heart Bay (Panama City)
Address: 615 N Bonita Ave, Panama City, FL 32401 Phone: (850) 769-1511 Distance from PCB: ~15–20 minutes east via US-98
This is the primary full-service hospital serving the greater Panama City Beach area. Ascension Sacred Heart Bay is a 273-bed acute care facility offering:
- 24/7 Emergency Department with Level II Trauma designation
- Cardiac catheterization lab and open-heart surgery
- Comprehensive cancer care
- Orthopedic and spine surgery
- Women's and children's services
- Stroke Center (Primary Stroke Center certified)
For serious emergencies or planned surgeries, this is where most PCB residents go. The drive from the beach is typically 15–20 minutes depending on traffic on the Hathaway Bridge.
Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center (Panama City)
Address: 449 W 23rd St, Panama City, FL 32405 Phone: (850) 769-8341 Distance from PCB: ~20–25 minutes
A 176-bed HCA-affiliated hospital with a full emergency department, cardiac services, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Gulf Coast Regional is particularly well-regarded for its cardiac and women's services.
Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast (Miramar Beach / Destin area)
Address: 7800 US-98 W, Miramar Beach, FL 32550 Phone: (850) 278-3000 Distance from PCB: ~30–35 minutes west
If you're on the western end of PCB or in the Pier Park area, Sacred Heart Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach is a solid option. It's a smaller community hospital but has a 24/7 ER and handles a wide range of acute conditions.
Urgent Care Centers in Panama City Beach
For non-emergency situations — minor injuries, illness, prescription refills — PCB has several urgent care options that are far faster than an ER visit:
- Ascension Medical Group Urgent Care – PCB: 11390 Panama City Beach Pkwy, (850) 249-6200. Open 7 days a week.
- AFC Urgent Care Panama City Beach: 8507 Thomas Dr, (850) 588-2273. Walk-ins welcome, X-ray on site.
- Emerald Coast Urgent Care: 15600 Panama City Beach Pkwy, (850) 236-0123. Extended evening hours.
- CVS MinuteClinic: Located inside select CVS locations along Front Beach Rd. Good for minor illness and vaccinations.
Emergency Services: Fire, EMS & Police
Bay County EMS
Bay County operates a modern EMS system with multiple stations serving Panama City Beach. Average response times in the PCB corridor are typically 6–9 minutes. The county has invested heavily in cardiac and stroke response protocols — AEDs are widely deployed at resorts and public spaces.
Panama City Beach Fire Department
PCB has its own municipal fire department (separate from Bay County) with multiple stations along the beach corridor. The department is ISO Class 1 rated — the highest possible rating — which can positively affect your homeowner's insurance premiums.
Non-emergency: (850) 233-5000 Emergency: 911
Panama City Beach Police Department
Non-emergency: (850) 233-5000 Emergency: 911
The PCBPD is a full-service municipal department. During peak season (spring break, summer), staffing increases significantly to handle the tourist population surge.
Coast Guard & Water Rescue
Panama City Beach has a U.S. Coast Guard Station at the marina area, and the Bay County Sheriff's Office operates marine patrol units. The beach itself is patrolled by lifeguards during peak season (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day) at designated public beach access points.
For boaters and waterfront property owners, the Coast Guard Sector Mobile covers this area. VHF Channel 16 is the emergency hailing frequency on the water.
Best Airports for Panama City Beach
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) — Primary Choice
Distance from PCB: ~15 minutes (located just north of the beach on US-98) Airlines: American, Delta, Southwest, United (seasonal) Direct routes: Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, and more
ECP is the hands-down best airport for Panama City Beach. It's modern (opened 2010), easy to navigate, and has grown its route network substantially. For investors, this is the airport your rental guests will fly into — its proximity to the beach (no bridge traffic, no long drive) is a genuine competitive advantage over Destin and 30A, which require longer drives from their nearest airports.
Investor note: ECP's direct routes from major Midwest and Southeast cities drive a significant portion of PCB's vacation rental demand. When evaluating a rental property, ECP's route map is worth studying — it tells you exactly which feeder markets your guests are coming from.
Pensacola International Airport (PNS) — Western Option
Distance from PCB: ~75 minutes west Airlines: American, Delta, Southwest, United Direct routes: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, and more
PNS is a larger airport with more daily flights and often better fares. Some buyers on the western end of PCB or in the Pier Park area use PNS for its broader schedule. It's also the preferred airport for anyone connecting through Atlanta on Delta.
Panama City–Bay County Airport (PFN) — General Aviation
Distance from PCB: ~20 minutes The former commercial airport now serves general aviation, charter flights, and corporate aircraft. If you're flying in on a private or charter flight, PFN is the closest option to the beach.
Specialty Care & Medical Specialists
For ongoing specialist care, the Panama City metro area has a solid network:
- Cardiology: Cardiovascular Institute of Northwest Florida (Panama City)
- Oncology: Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center (Panama City)
- Orthopedics: Andrews Institute (Gulf Breeze, ~60 min) — one of the top sports medicine and orthopedic centers in the Southeast
- Mental Health: Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital (Panama City)
- Dialysis: Multiple DaVita and Fresenius centers in Panama City
For highly specialized care (major cancer centers, transplant programs, advanced neurosurgery), the nearest major academic medical centers are:
- UAB Medicine (Birmingham, AL) — ~4 hours north
- Mayo Clinic Florida (Jacksonville) — ~5 hours east
- Shands / UF Health (Gainesville) — ~4.5 hours east
What This Means for Buyers
For primary residents: The healthcare infrastructure in the PCB area is solid for a community its size. You have two full-service hospitals within 20–25 minutes, multiple urgent care options on the beach, and a well-rated EMS system. For routine and acute care, you're well-covered.
For retirees with complex medical needs: If you require frequent specialist visits or have a serious chronic condition, factor in the drive to Panama City for appointments. The beach itself doesn't have a hospital — that's a 15–20 minute drive minimum. For most retirees this is entirely manageable; for those needing dialysis or frequent infusions, confirm that the specific provider you need has a location in the area.
For investors: ECP's direct flight access from major metros is a genuine demand driver for your rental property. Guests who can fly direct to a beach airport — rather than driving 90 minutes from a distant hub — book more often and stay longer. This is a real competitive advantage PCB holds over some other Emerald Coast markets.
